Not to state the obvious, but hair buns have come to many a frizzed-out gal’s rescue, second only to conditioner or hair serum, during her time of need. They’re fashionable but not overthought, easy to do on the fly and, awesomely enough, can be incorporated into other existing styles and still look super cute. As to the latter, one of our current obsessions is the half-updo which we’ve taken to a whole other level with a pair of buns on each side. Similar to bantu knots but slightly bigger, double hair buns are a nifty spinoff of the top knot. They’re also quite the quirky way to wear your box braids for summer, not to mention stylishly keep hair away from the face in general. And in these temperatures? Always a brilliant idea. Read on to learn more about how you can create these cute hair buns:

Half Halo Braid Tutorial

Step 1: Wash and condition your hair.

Start with clean, freshly washed hair (we like the Dove Nutritive Solutions Daily Moisture Shampoo and the Dove Nutritive Solutions Daily Moisture Conditioner). Afterwards, coat hair with some leave-in conditioner, like the Nexxus New York Salon Care Diametress Headress Leave In Conditioning Crème.

Step 2: Create your part.

Create a middle part, and then section off that part till you reach halfway across your head, usually at the crown.

Step 3: Clip off your hair.

Clip off one section with a duckbill clamp.

Step 4: Create your first bun.

Create your first bun with the loose section. First, gather the hair (or braids) into a ponytail, then twirl them together so they form one snugly-coiled rope. Next, loop the rope around in a circle and continue coiling it around its own base until you reach the ends of the hair. Remember, the best, most interesting buns have steps or “layers” to them, just like the dessert version!

Step 5: Secure your bun.

For a tight, secure bun, periodically insert bobby pins after each revolution or “layer,” or even where the seams meet. Otherwise, use a fabric-covered hair tie and figure-eight it around the base to affix the bun.

Step 6: Unclamp.

Unclamp the other section and repeat Steps 4 and 5.

Step 7: Check your hair.

Check to see if your remaining loose hair is evenly parted off at the back of your head, or that your remaining braids are aligned. Symmetry is good, but don’t stress if your partlines are slightly uneven. Done! Looking for more cool braided hairstyles? Check out how to get in on the hidden braid trend.
